The Pellet-Scan-System PS-400C is used for the optical quality control of granules. The system counts enclosed defects, colour aberrations and other contamination in 10 adjustable size classes from 100 µm upwards depending on the required output. It is designed as a control to the production of granules. The inspection of the samples is automatic, whereby the pellets are inspected singularly for their quality. The PS-400C unit consists of a mechanical and a computer part. The mechanical part holds the granules for inspection. It extracts and then separates them, before transferring them to the measurement sensor unit.

The computer part consists essentially of the image-processing unit and hardware which evaluates the images. The user-interface, ie the user dialogue, is via monitor and keyboard. The images are viewed on the monitor. The granule sample is placed in the hopper. From here a mechanical separation device carries the sample of granules to the inspection line, where an image of the material is taken by two cameras from two sides. The image taken is evaluated immediately. Colour aberrations and other contamination are detected. The inspection is carried out with two 3 CCD-chip colour cameras, which is equipped with special optics and lighting devices. The granules are tested in several steps with reference to colour aberrations and the smallest occurring contamination. Thresholds can be defined for specifying results and adjusting the system. The pellets will be graded as 'not in order' if discoloration from within an adjustable discoloration scale and from within an adjustable percentage of pellets are present. The evaluations from the system can be viewed on the monitor.
